Robert Lyn Nelson

A Lifetime of Artistic Exploration

Early Beginnings

Born in 1955 on the shores of Southern California, Robert Lyn Nelson demonstrated a deep passion for art from an early age. He began creating art at just two years old, showing an innate talent that would shape his future. Surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the Pacific Ocean, he was captivated by the natural world, which became a central theme in his artistic journey.

His dedication to his craft led him to pursue art seriously from a young age, earning him recognition as a child prodigy. By thirteen, he was awarded a scholarship to study at Mount San Antonio College. At fourteen, he held his first sold out solo exhibition.

In 1973, Nelson moved to Hawaii, where he found profound inspiration in the islands' natural beauty. Hawaii became his forever home, deeply influencing his artistic vision and providing a sanctuary for his creative pursuits.

A Versatile Artistic Journey

Nelson is the founder of the Modern Marine Art Movement (1979), pioneering a style that depicts views both above and below the surface of the ocean. This groundbreaking approach revolutionized marine art and inspired countless artists to explore new perspectives in their work.

While he is well known for his depictions of marine life, his portfolio extends far beyond a single theme or style. He has explored numerous artistic movements including abstract expressionism, cubism, impressionism, surrealism, photorealism, collage, monotypes, and conceptual art. His deep appreciation for the post-Renaissance canon of painting is evident throughout his work, and he continues to push the boundaries of modern painting.

From striking contemporary abstracts to thought-provoking figurative pieces, Nelson's ability to adapt and innovate has been a hallmark of his career. His influences span a diverse array of artists, including Wyeth, Dalí, Rockwell, Parrish, Picasso, Leonardo, and Rembrandt, among others.

Throughout his career, Nelson has demonstrated a deep curiosity about the human experience, music, and the natural world. His Musical Surrealism series, which explores interpretations of composers ranging from Mozart to The Beatles, showcases his ability to blend emotion and sound into visual narratives. His Beatles Tribute Series offers surreal interpretations of the band's expansive songbook, capturing their music's spirit in imaginative and unexpected ways.

Global Recognition and Environmental Advocacy

Nelson's work has gained international recognition, with his paintings displayed in exhibitions worldwide. His imagery has been featured on album covers, including Summer in Paradise by The Beach Boys, and on the Republic of Palau's Marine Life Protection commemorative coins. The United Nations has also utilized his artwork in various publications.

In 2001, he became the youngest artist to have a solo exhibition at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. One of the original paintings on exhibit, From Sea to Shining Sea, was chosen as the official painting for the U.S. Pavilion at Expo '98 in Lisbon, a significant moment in his career.

Beyond his artistic contributions, Nelson has played a significant role in environmental advocacy. He is a co-founder of the National Marine Sanctuaries Foundation and has lent support to numerous environmental organizations worldwide. His commitment to marine conservation and climate awareness has remained a driving force behind his work. In 1997, Vice President Al Gore honored Nelson with the Environmental Hero Award, acknowledging his dedication to ocean conservation and environmental advocacy.

His collectors include high-profile figures such as Clint Eastwood, Willie Nelson, Paloma Picasso, Sir Paul McCartney, Steven Tyler, US Presidents Clinton, Reagan, Bush, and many more. Despite this recognition, Nelson remains dedicated to his craft, continually pushing the limits of artistic expression.

A Continued Artistic Pursuit

Robert's work continues to evolve, embracing new styles and techniques that reflect his ongoing curiosity and passion for art. Recent years have seen a return to darker hues and kinetic compositions, reminiscent of his earlier works, while his fascination with nature, music, and the human condition remains a driving force in his creative journey.

Nelson's commitment to artistic exploration ensures that his work remains fresh, dynamic, and relevant. With each new piece, he challenges himself and his audience, proving that art is not just a medium of expression but a lifelong journey of discovery.

Robert Lyn Nelson is also a devoted father to his two daughters, Margaux and Sienna, the latter of whom has followed in his artistic footsteps. He is a proud grandfather to two grandchildren, Sloane and Lennon, who bring him great joy and inspiration.
